Checklist for the perfect espresso
Every now and then, the results of coffee preparation don’t meet your expectations: the coffee doesn’t taste nice or its appearance leaves a lot to be desired. When this occurs, it is important to act swiftly and find the source of the problem. The list below explains the most common problems and their possible causes. This way you will be able to find a quick solution.
Insufficient aroma
- Coffee dosage too low
- Roasted coffee is too old (aroma fades over time)
- With coffee machines: coffee grinder too hot
- Ground too coarse (extraction time too short)
- Water hardness too high (above 6ºdH)
- Brewing pressure too low (below 7 bar)
Too bitter
- Brewing temperature too high (above 95º)
- Ground too fine (bitter compounds dissolved)
- Inadequate cleaning (thoroughly clean all parts that come into contact with coffee)
Unfamiliar taste
- Roasted coffee is too old (rancid aroma)
- Bean container or grinder not clean (oxidized fats, oils and waxes affect flavour)
- Machine not clean (clean filter and outlets)
- Not thoroughly rinsed after cleaning
